Seems like the "BC" in BC Day Long Weekend stands for Bands and Catching fish!!!
Before we get to that though I just want to say Thank You to everyone who donated to the Kids' Access Fund during The Sandbar Lemonade Stand. Donations totalled more than $800!!! Here's Carrie Ann presenting the donations to Laura Lunty from Tofino Parks and Recreation.
If you missed it, bet that we'll try it again soon for another great local charity, in the mean time.... this is what you missed out on.
Ok, now to get back on track for the Bands and Cathin' fish angle on the BC Day Long Weekend.
Let's start with the B(ands)..... There is so much live music lined up for this weekend it's crazy, the following is just a little bit of it.
Friday night:
-The Weigh West in Tofino has a bunch of local guys doing some country and bluegrass type tunes in the Dockside Pub. No Cover
-The Maquinna in Tofino has No Other Way and The Hellbros. No Cover
Saturday night:
-The Army, Navy, Air force in Ucluelet has No Other Way, Hellbros, Sam The Jet
-The Tofino Legion hosts Jon and Roy, these guys are always a big hit out here
Sunday Night there will be fireworks in the Ucluelet Harbour around 9:30
Monday Night Sean Burns comes back to the Maquinna, here's an interview and perfromance with Sean from our studio a few months back. We'll probably have him in studio again some time Monday
For the Catching fish part of the weekend there are 2 major derbies underway. The Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby continues all summer and this weekend The Tofino Legion Fishing Derby is on so.... Catch some fish, rock out and keep it locked on Long Beach Radio.

The Sandbar Lemonade Stand!!!
Thursday afternoon our afternoon host Carrie Ann is going to set up a lemonade stand on what is known as "Honeymoon Island" A small patch of sand in the Tofino Harbour that disappears at high tide. The good folks from Tofino Water Taxi will be taking her out there, give them a call if you want a lift out there to be part of the fun. Carrie will still be co-hosting her afternoon show on the airwaves too through the miracle of cellular phone technology
The proceeds will be donated to the Kids Access Fund which makes it possible for less fortunate kids to take part in Tofino Parks and Recreation programs. If she has any sort of success or at least a really good time we'll try to do it again later in the summer for another cause... or maybe a similar idea based on an interesting Ukee location and charity.
So here's your invitation fishermen, kayakers, whale watchers, canoe tours, strong swimmers, floathouse residents, SCUBA divers, water taxi operators and anyone else. Come visit Carrie and help a great cause.
Here's a video of Carrie Ann's luggage for the trip
If you want to get in touch with Carrie Ann about it email her at Carrie@chmzfm.com. Pictures and whatnot to come.
So tune in for hijinx and updates from The Sandbar Lemonade Stand Thursday afternoon on Long Beach Radio.

Motorbikes, Extreme Frontiers, Rugged Guys, and Rock and Roll
It's been a fun couple of days. I've had a chance to interview some interesting people who have been in Tofino and Ucluelet filming for travel-adventure TV series.
First, Charley Boorman was in town to wrap up filming for the upcoming BBC series "Extreme Frontiers: Canada". You might recognize him as the guy who rode a motorcycle around the world with Obi Wan Kenobi in "The Long Way 'Round". Here's the interview along with some video and photos;
So, if you were wondering why there were so many motorcycles on Monday, that's your answer.
This weekend also saw one time Much Music VJ Tim Deegan roll into town to film an installment of "Rugged". As my interviews often do we got a ways off topic, but Tim was a good sport.
Speaking of making videos... Our very own Cam Dennison has been busy with his camera and made a video for a tune of the new Wil album... Check it out. Check out more Wil at www.ibreakstrings.com and check out Cam's show most Thursday nights starting at 7pm.
Next update, harpoons from hockey players, Carrie catches a fish, and maybe something about radio.
Thanks for listening to Long Beach Radio

2nd Annual Tofino Saltwater Classic Fishing Derby
This weekend almost 100 anglers are taking to the waters around Tofino for the 2nd Annual Tofino Saltwater Classic Fishing Derby. Hosted by long time Vancouver Canuck, now Calgary Flame, Brendan Morrison. Last year Willie Mitchell took part, hopefully we'll see another NHL player or 2 this year. The derby raises money for a number of community programs and salmon enhancement, it's also a load of fun. We'll be bringing you live updates from some of the boats, the weigh station and other fun places on the air. Listeners abroad can tune in via the "listen live" button to the right. We'll also have some videos, pictures and other things right here on the website.
Final Results:
Largest Halibut: Matt Harbour, 79.9lbs
Largest Coho: Sean Perch, 9.6lbs
3rd place Chinook: Mark Kosick, 24.25lbs
2nd place Chinook: N/A
1st place Chinook TIE Anthony Kelly and Shaun Karp, 34.55lbs
Here's a video of the award presentation at the end of the derby
Here are the leaders after the end of the first day;
Chinook: Shawn Carp's 34.5lber
Coho: Reg Fitzgerald 9.2lbs (no photo, sorry)
There's still lots of time to fish before the scales close at 4pm
Brendan swung by the dock around 2 on Saturday to drop off one of the derby's youngest competitors and chat about the action so far.
The scales opened at noon Saturday, no derby fish brought in by 12:30 but some other anglers brought in this lot, including a good sized 27 pound Chinook.
Last year's winning Chinook came courtesy of Scotty Jaynes at 38.95 pounds so expect some big fish.
Here's a look at some of the goings on from Friday, before the fishing started.
Yasmin from Westerly news did a piece on yesterdays intense hockey action, read it HERE
I talked to Brendan about a month ago, just before the Canucks ill-fated Stanley Cup Final game 7 and, even with the hanging in the air we mostly talked fishing. Here's that interview.
Here are a few of the interviews and videos from last year's event. The first is the presentation of the awards last year. I guess it's going to be a little more formal this year, not too formal I would guess.
The following interview is from the lead up to the first Saltwater Classic last year.
Tune in and check back here for updates over the weekend. I'll leave you with a little video I made from one of my fishing adventures this spring.
Thanks for listening to Long Beach Radio and "Tight Lines" to all the anglers out there.

How Carrie Ann Spent Her Summer Vacation. By Carrie Ann
When people visualize a "Summer Vacation" there are a few things that come to mind: the lake, s’mores, band camp, canoeing, carnies, and food on a stick. Don’t get me wrong folks; these are all beautiful things but not really this girl’s snort of whiskey. No sir. There are 3 very critical components to ensure that my summer vacation is a glorious success. These three components are, in no particular order: rock n roll, camaraderie, and of course, kicking one off of the infamous "Bucket List".
My tour of rock took me back to the roots of my native stomping grounds of Northern Alberta. Now, I didn’t make the trek to Slave Lake as planned, but did spend an electrifying 7 days on Whyte Ave in Edmonton, Alberta. 7 days later I am still currently recovering from those events I might add.
The first night of my venture took me to "The Pawn Shop" where some friends and I went to enjoy a 100% pure Canadiana-rock show, put on by none other than Rolling Stone cover hopefuls, The Sheepdogs, and Toronto’s "cosmic cowboys": The Sadies. It was a tremendous performance from both bands that will resonate at "The Pawn Shop on Whyte" for years to come. Given that The Sheepdogs have been a hot topic for me amidst my afternoon musings at Long Beach Radio, and their music is in regular rotation on my show, I couldn’t pass up the potential for a little Q&A with front man Ewan Currie when the opportunity presented itself! This was not a planned affair, so I found myself a little weak in the knees after experiencing such a powerful performance. I had also experienced too many pops. Regardless, I held it together as best as a twitter pated mega fan can to bring you this rather embarrassing and altogether interesting interview!
My adventures then took me to the shopping mecca, West Edmonton Mall. It has been a while since I’ve been able to grit my teeth and deal with the overcrowded department stores, but I was on a mission friends! You see, I’ve been searching for a pair of genuine, card playin’, skirt chasin’, cattle wranglin’ cowboy boots since I arrived on the Island. The search has been altogether unsuccessful. So when you find yourself at the largest shopping center in the rolling prairies of Alberta, you are bound to be in luck! And hot dang, if I didn’t find the nicest, most rockin’ pair you’ve ever laid your eyes on!
The boots then accompanied me to kick another task off of the old "Bucket List". Not only is West Edmonton Mall home to a large western wear and tack store, but it is also home to one of the most famous indoor shooting ranges in Canada! Ever since I was a little girl I have been a fan of the Dirty Harry series, starring Clint Eastwood. I have since then, always wanted to fire his coveted .44 Magnum. With a little coaching from my brother and boyfriend, I found myself standing in front of a target cocked, and ready to fire that giant smoke wagon! I wish I could say I went guns a blazin’, and looked as smooth doing it as Clint himself would, but after three shots I was satisfied! It was probably safer for me to put the gun down as my arms could have shaken up a can of paint. Please enjoy a video of me trying to harness the fury of a .44 Magnum with my bare hands!
I also included a clip from a film in the Dirty Harry series called The Deadpool. This is one of the first roles Jim Carrey ever had in the movie industry. He plays a strung out rock star shooting a music video for Guns n’ Roses "Welcome to the Jungle" Carrey eventually meets him demise at the hand of a serial killer sought out by Inspector Callaghan!
The next portion of my holiday stems from the cockles of my youth. Ever since my pre-teen punk rock years and the first time I ever listened to the album "I Heard They Suck Live" from NOFX, I have had a hankering to catch their punk rock show in the flesh! I have had tickets to a number of their shows...(3 to be exact,) but it seems something has always come up to interfere. Not this time friends! NOFX put on one of best punk rock shows of my life! The venue was filled with mosh kids of all ages. The floor was one giant, swirling amoeba occasionally spitting out an injured youth. There were punk rockers climbing the buildings support beams and into the rafters, and then hurling themselves back into the mob of fans. It was everything a legit punk-rock show should be, and when you have the musicianship and chemistry of punk rock/bluegrass band Old Man Markley opening the stage, the energy is infectious!

All of this is just scratching the surface. A little conditioning to prepare me for the Canada Day weekend at "Blues on Whyte" with long-time friends of Long Beach Radio, Ross Neilsen and the Sufferin' Bastards! I was fortunate enough catch them recording live for a new album due out this fall. And when you’re basking in the glory of this powerful Canadian blues rock trio at one of the longest running blues establishments in Canadian history, you realize what actually defines the word "perfection". (Photos by Jim Sullivan)

So there you have it folks! That pretty much sums up episode 1 of "Carrie Ann's Summer Vacation". There will be lots more to come as we have only experienced just the tip of Summer. This concludes the first entry in my very first blog. My only hope is that it was as good for you as it was for me!
