Thursday October 18 (this Thursday) marks the Shake Out BC earthquake drill. There's a lot going on, here on the coast and around BC. As their website states:
"You are invited to join thousands of people who will Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:18 a.m. on October 18th* in the 2012 Great British Columbia ShakeOut!
More than 12.5 million people were registered to participate in ShakeOut drills worldwide in 2011. Participating is a great way for your family or organization to become better prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes. "
So, if your business, school, household or whatever doesn't already have plans for an earthquake drill tune in at 10:18 and we'll be broadcasting a one minute drill. Their website, www.shakeoutbc.ca has a lot of useful resources about preparing for an earthquake.
Also in the region for Shake Out BC;
-The District of Tofino will be testing their tsunami sirens and emergency call service at around 11 am so don't freak out if the sirens go off
-Also on October 18, 2012 everyone is invited to visit a Reception Centre at the Community Hall in Tofino to get a first hand look at what to expect if you are asked to evacuate your home due to an emergency or disaster. The Emergency Social Services Team will have the Reception Centre open to the public from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon.
So there you go, in an emergency a little planning can go a long way.
After all that's over don't miss The Tofino International Film Festival this weeked!

While they do raise awareness, I think earthquake drills could use some improvement. There are so many other ways to be ready for a quake - such as preparing supplies and having a PPLIC plan.
