Ucluelet Aquarium Grand Opening on Friday

Click HERE or if you prefer you awesomeness via Facebook click HERE or, if you've clicked enough already today read on right here because we're gonna talk about an aquarium...

THE UCLUELET AQUARIUM
After years of hard work it's finally happening, This Friday June 1st at 2pm the grand opening takes place at the new location (right beside the old location) by The Whiskey Dock in Ucluelet. So you may need this;

Just download, print, fill it out and present it to the necessary authority;

Remember the old aquarium?

Have a look at this?

There's a lot more to see inside the new Ucluelet aquarium, come check it out at the grand opening on Friday afternoon. If you can't make it tune in to Long Beach Radio Friday afternoon for a little coverage of the event.

While the new facility is amazing I have to point out that the thing that made the old, small aquarium so inviting was the passionate people who spent time there, excitedly informing us about the mating and feeding habits of all sorts of marine beasties, answering the same questions 100 times a day and doing it all with infectious enthusiasm.  It's those same people that will make this new aquarium incredible. It's the hard work and vision of those individuals and the many volunteers, donors and others that will make a big room full of glass and brine a place of wonder.  Congratulation to those who have worked on this project so hard for so long and thank you from a guy who had no part in making it happen but hopes to enjoy it for years to come.

See you all on Friday.

It's A Beautiful Day!! (or The Day I Had Salmon Caviar For Breakfast)

First, to set the mood;

or

or even

Now that you get the idea, it's a lovely sunny day in Long Beach Radio-land and my morning started with fresh baked goodies, salmon caviar and oysters for breakfast... That's right, my life's tough. Chef Liam from The Long Beach Lodge covered for Bobby Lax on this morning's Friday Funky Food Hour, here's the audio;

Catch Liam and a ton of other talented chefs at Tofino's 4th street dock on Saturday May 26th for the prawn week Feast Tofino Dock Party.  Long Beach Radio will be there broadcasting live as well so tune in if you can't make it.

Next Friday is the official grand opening on the new Ucluelet aquarium. This week there's a bit of a soft opening going on so if the curiosity is killing you get down there and have a look.

I'm gonna shut down the laptop and get out into the sun now.

Just In Time For Feast! You Gotta Eat Here, Comes Here

We all know that the west coast has great food, in fact we're right in the middle of a big festival celebrating that.  Well, Food Network's You Gotta Eat Here knows that too.  Have a listen to this chat between Me and TV funnyman John Catucci at The Wildside Grill;

It's true, I spent the day at The Wildside Grill moonlighting as "guy with pork tacos"... in fact I found this "behind the scenes" shot in a tweet from Tourism Tofino;

So for the loyal listeners out there; when I get shipped off to TV stardom I'll think of you.... as I bathe in a solid gold bathtub full of champagne while eating hard boiled bald eagle eggs served out of crystal wine glasses stolen from little old ladies by my army of bloodthirsty ninja-assassins....

Just kidding, warm champagne is gross.

Thanks to the You Gotta Eat Here production crew for being so professional and respectful toward the people around the shoot, it means a lot.

Just a reminder, if you like food talk on the radio this week's Friday Funky Food Hour guest host is Chef Liam from The Long Beach Lodge (Friday morning 9am)

May Long Weekend, Feast and Rock in Tofino and Ucluelet

In the words of Penny Lane in Almost Famous; "It's all happening". This weekend is May Long Weekend and the beginning of FEAST!! If that's not enough reason enough to party there's a lot of great live music to check out, let's have a look.
First off, FEAST! This weekend as part of the Feast Culinary Festival there will be a free, public dock party on Saturday afternoon from 1-3.  Here's the description as it appears on the Feast website;

Location: 4th Street Dock, Tofino
Time: 1:00pm-3:00pm
Tickets: FREE public event

Event Description:
Saturday Dock Festival- Salmon Week

Come on down to Tofino’s beautiful working inner harbor and enjoy an afternoon of free tasting!

Visiting acclaimed Chefs Nico Schuermans, Joel Watanabe, JC Poirier and Andrew Springett will be along side our own local talented chefs to bring you the freshest samplings from our own coastal waters!

Experience the freshest of seafood tasting, educational tours of sustainable seafood processing and preparation demonstrations on Tofino’s working 4th Street Dock! Musical talent for this weeks festival will be Smalltown Empire featuring Ron and Anne Weeks! This is a "car free" event!

Long Beach Radio will be broadcasting live on the scene thanks to our partners at The Long Beach Lodge. So come check it out and say "Hi". Long Beach Lodge has a great Epicurean Showcase event coming up at the end of the month you should probably look into as part of Feast, it was a blast last year...
Check out www.feasttofino.com for a list of events.

May Long weekend is extra special in Tofino because the owners of Clayoquot Island open their beautiful space to the public on Saturday and Sunday and you don't even have to swim there!!  Head town to the 1st street dock in Tofino and some nice people will happily bring you over for free, bring a snack and plan for a fun day outside exploring some amazing beaches, lovely manicured gardens and open fields to run and play.  The boats run between noon and 6 with the last boat leaving Tofino at 4pm, no pets.

Other fun this weekend comes in the form of Rock and Roll. We open with a little charitable rock and roll at Ucluelet's Army, Navy, Airforce Club. Recently an electrical fire destroyed The Driftwood in Ucluelet so a bunch of folks have gotten together to help those affected, here's the poster for the event;

Also in Ucluelet this weekend, Fish and Bird are playing at Wild Heather Books Saturday night;

In other rock and roll news, long time friends of Long Beach Radio, The Ross Neilsen Band are in Tofino this Sunday at The Weigh West. You might remember them as Ross Neilsen and The Sufferin' Bastards from their previous visits to the coast over the years.  Well, Shawn Bastard, once their bass player ran off with our one time afternoon host Carrie Anne and left Ross and Karl to searcg for a new person (or inanimate object) to fill in the bottom end. Here's the gripping tale;

Clearly they've spent too much time rocking to develop quality film making skills... If you want to watch them do something they're good at be at the Weigh West in Tofino Sunday night (no cover, 19+)

The Tofino Legion is getting a little country this Saturday with Tim Hus and Ball Gag and Chain Gang

Finally Thursday Night at The Black Rock in Ucluelet and Friday, Saturday at The Weigh West in Tofino Mark Crissinger will be getting his one man blues-rock show on, here's an old studio visit with Mark;

I'm sure there is a lot more going on this May Long Weekend on the coast (fishing, hiking, whale watching, surfing to name a few) but this should get you started with a few ideas.  If you have a May Long Weekend event you'd like me to share here send it along geoff@longbeachradio.ca

Fun, Sunny Weekend

I got a bit of a sunburn yesterday. That's something to be thoroughly proud of out here in the rain forest.  There was other fun over the weekend too;

First we had a fun, sort of Mother's Day themed Friday Funky Food Hour, here's the audio

Also, very awesomely, we were visited by The Poor Young Things on Friday before they rocked the Tofino Legion with The Dudes. They joked and played a few songs, check it out here;

With May Long Weekend AND Feast Tofino right around the corner we'll have lots going on here on the blog and on air so check back and tune in often.

Thanks for listening to Long Beach Radio. -Geoff

BC Hyrdo Smart Meter Interview

This morning I talked with Peter Boulton, he's concerned about the possible health, financial and privacy effects of the BC Hydro Smart Meters that are being installed across the province. Here's the interview;

As mentioned in the interview Peter is hosting presentations on the meters tonight (May 1,2012) at The Wickaninnish Community School in Tofino and tomorrow at The Ucluelet Community Center, both events start at 7pm.

BC Hydro's page about the meters can be found here; http://www.bchydro.com/energy_in_bc/projects/smart_metering_infrastructure_program.html

On another note, it's International Worker's Day so don't work too hard.
